Upgraded delivery to beat the postal strikes

Tuesday, 20 October 2009

Myakka customers will NOT be affected by the postal strikes. Georgie and Simon have opted to upgrade any orders which would normally go out through the Royal Mail to their Parcelforce delivery service. The Parcelforce courier service is completely unaffected by the Royal Mail’s strikes.

“We decided to upgrade any orders which usually go out through the Royal Mail to Parcelforce so that our customers will not be impacted by the union strikes”, commented Simon Whitehead, Director

Here at Myakka we are passionate about delivering excellent customer service and this move to use our Parcelforce courier service is to avoid any disruption to our customers who maybe worried about the impact of the Royal Mail strikes on their orders.

Please note that catalogue and wood sample requests will still be sent via Royal Mail so customers maybe subject to delays as a result of the postal strikes.

India Supplier Visit: New Furniture Development

Thursday, 15 October 2009

Following Georgie and Alexandra’s supplier visit to India last week we are pleased to report back on progress with our latest Myakka furniture designs. It is no coincidence our Myakka hardwood furniture is attractive, practical and cost effective. Designed specifically for the British market almost all our furniture is produced exclusively for Myakka in India using the latest German CAD machinery. Exceptional Furniture

One of the main reasons for this trip was to sign off the latest samples prototyped by our suppliers from our designs and specifications. They include new corner bookcases and corner TV units as part of our current drive to fulfil the demand for beautiful solid wood space saving furniture. To complement our best selling Hathi Cupboard we are also creating a new range of pieces featuring the beautiful carvings. These include a bookcase, small cabinet and blanket box. We were delighted with the samples our suppliers had produced and are looking forward to receiving the production items. These new lines will be available in the UK from Spring 2010.

We are also pleased to report on further improvements across most areas of our supplier’s production facility. In particular the sanding and finishing department has been enhanced with all workers now having their own personal orbital sander at their finishing station. We believe in continuous product improvement, particularly when enhancements both increase product quality and improve workers welfare.

“No trip to India would be complete without an early morning wake up call to see the sunrise over Jodhpur, the Blue City. This year we did it in style with a thermos flask of chai”, commented Georgie!

India Supplier Visit: SKSN update

Tuesday, 13 October 2009

Georgie and Alexandra have just returned from a fruitful trip to Myakka’s main suppliers in India. This the second trip of 2009 was essential to check on progress with the new furniture designs and the developments of fair trade community projects set in motion during the trip back in February.

Regular readers of the Myakka News Blog will be familiar with SKSN School, the support we provide and the projects currently underway. The Vocational Training Centre that Myakka helped setup earlier this year provides the children leaving SKSN School with work in fair trade conditions. Initially setup to supply Myakka’s exclusive silk cushions and linen cushions ranges the output from the Centre now includes clothing and accessories which are sold locally. Georgie and Alexandra’s latest designs had been made into samples ready to be signed off during their visit. “We were happy with the samples and purchased enough fabric for the production of the two new cushion ranges which are due in the UK in early 2010”, commented Alexandra.

Georgie also purchased two new hand-operated sewing machines, to add to the six pedal-operated and two existing hand-operated machines at the Centre. The new sewing machines will allow the Centre to fulfil the increased demand and be suitable for students with lower limb disabilities.

There have also been other developments at the school with the expansion of the teacher training college which now has over 90 students and has been acknowledged by the state of Rajasthan for its outstanding teaching quality. This section of SKSN now provides a modest income which helps towards the school running costs. Two graduates were originally SKSN pupils who are now employed as teachers at SKSN.

Following the trip in February Georgie and Simon, Myakka’s directors, paid for the materials for new desks and benches to be made for the school children. These were delivered for the start of the new school year in July. “The new desks and benches looked great and were clearly very much appreciated by both the teachers and the children”, commented Georgie.

On every trip the team like to arrive with practical gifts and had been tipped off the SKSN School kitchen required a new cooking pot and some utensils. As you can see from the picture below Georgie has clearly found one of the largest pots ever on her trip to the local ‘pot shop’. After all the pot will need to help cater for 550 growing children!

Only the best

Monday, 5 October 2009

Our exclusive hardwood furniture is designed here in the UK specifically to satisfy the tastes of the British customer.  The pieces are manufactured in India using CAD technology and the latest German machinery.  Each piece is then finished to exact standards and checked thoroughly through strict quality control systems.

The beautiful native Indian hardwoods used in the construction of our furniture, Sheesham and Acacia wood, are hand waxed to give deep lustrous finishes.  Wood as a material naturally moves with changes in the ambient surrounding and at Myakka, we have developed the correct seasoning and construction techniques to ensure this natural trait is minimised in our furniture.  We are also currently in the process of validating the origins of the wood used in our furniture to prove it is in compliance with the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council).

To ensure the products we have designed are engineered to the standards we demand, a team from Myakka visit our suppliers in India every six months. These trips are useful for many reasons; progressing new designs into production, checking quality control systems, discussing concept development with the engineers and also working on our community projects.  Georgie and Alexandra are currently in India as we write and will be adding some articles to the Myakka Blog on their return.

To help customers, we have put together various short videos demonstrating how easy it is to care for your Myakka furniture and keep it in tip-top condition – do have a look at the Myakka YouTube Channel.  Myakka strives to sell exceptional quality furniture and home accessories - please let us know what you think, drop us an email to sales@myakka.co.uk
