India Update – New furniture and textiles for spring 2012

Wednesday, 26 October 2011

Georgie and Alexandra have just returned from India following a very successful trip to catch up with our existing suppliers and to meet potential new suppliers.

During their visit, a ceremony took place with our furniture manufacturer to honour the new production unit that has just been completed. This new unit will be dedicated to mostly Myakka finishing stage. This will mean that the finishing will now be completed to a much higher standard as the facilities are purpose built to create a dust free environment and the quality can be easily monitored.

As part of the celebrations, Georgie and Alexandra each planted a Sheesham tree and rode camel’s back to the main factory. Georgie also had the important role of handing out sweets to all the workers who have taken a part in the production of the new unit.

Whilst at the factory the pair signed of over 20 new lines that will arrive in time for the spring catalogue. Most of these lines will be added to our flagship Mallani range but there will also be some new lines in the ever popular and constantly growing Hathi range.

During the visit Georgie and Alexandra met with our textile supplier who we met for the first time earlier in the year. More new lines were signed off including wall hangings, cushions, throws and footstools. These will also arrive ready to be featured in the spring catalogue.

SKSN School is always the highlight of any visit of the biannual trip. We are now the sponsors of the Vocational Training Centre (VTC). This means that every girl leaving SKSN School joins the VTC to give them all basic sewing skills. Those who excel will be able to use this skill to earn a living.

Grand Designs Success

Thursday, 13 October 2011

We have just returned from a very successful few days at Grand Designs LIVE in Birmingham. Over the three days of the show we spoke to lots of interested people and handed out hundreds of catalogues.

This was the first time that we had exhibited at Grand Designs LIVE in Birmingham and the response was really very positive. Many of our visitors to the stand had visited the show just to see us! We love doing shows such as Grand Designs LIVE as it gives more of our customers a chance to see, touch and feel the furniture before buying. It also lets us talk to customers face to face and prove that there are real people behind the catalogue and the website!

The show gave us the chance to show off some of our new lines launched this autumn. This included are already popular Chandra Stool, Hathi Tall Bookcase and the Pali Office Desk. All of these pieces and others were really well received at Grand Designs LIVE and we came away with lots of inspiration and ideas for our next batch of new lines for spring 2012.

During the three days of the show we ran a competition giving away a set of our famous Contemporary Nest of Tables away every day of the show. The three lucky winners will be notified shortly so if you entered keep those fingers crossed!

If you missed us at Grand Designs LIVE then our next shows is the Ideal Home Show at Christmas. This is a brand new show and we are really excited to be exhibiting there for the first time. More details will follow shortly so watch this space!

Find your perfect TV Unit!

Wednesday, 5 October 2011

As TVs are getting bigger it often means that your old TV unit isn’t wide enough to fit your new super widescreen television. To help we have come up with a list of TV units to fit your widescreen TVs. The measurement that widescreen TVs are sold in e.g. 42”, is not the width of the TV but the length diagonally of the screen. This does not include the surround either, so this needs to be taken into consideration when thinking about sizes. The basic ratio for widescreen TVs is 16:9 but to help you work it out we have worked out some approximate sizes for you. Please note though this does not include the TV surround so this will need to be added onto any measurements you take.

Size of TV (inches)Width (cm)Height (cm)
327140
347542
368045
388447
408950
429352
5011162

Please note that this is only an estimate and we would urge you to get accurate measurements of your TV before ordering your new TV unit.

Our Mallani Widescreen TV Cabinet has been specifically designed to accommodate the widest screen TVs. At 140cm wide it could easily accommodate a 50” screen or even bigger if you wanted! Our Mallani TV Console and Chandra TV Console are also super wide at 130cm meaning they can easily take the widest TVs but won’t dominate your room.

If your TV is positioned in the corner of your room then one of our corner TV units may fit the bill. The Pali Corner TV Unit is the widest at 100cm so can easily accommodate a 42” TV. If you have something a little smaller, then the Mallani Corner TV Unit, Chandra Corner TV Unit and Hathi Corner TV Unit are all 90cm wide making them perfect for any 40” Widescreen TV.

The Mallani Tall TV Unit is a good 110cm wide making it both practical for storage and it can hold a 42” TV easily.  The same can be said for the Pali TV Unit at 100cm which also has a roomy cupboard. The Hathi TV Unit is also 100cm wide but also comes to compete with four hand carved elephants.

Whatever the size of your TV is we have a great range of TV units to suit. As they are all hardwood they can easily take the weight of large televisions and will make you technology look effortlessly at home.

Myakka moves up and out!

Monday, 3 October 2011

As the Myakka team keeps growing, space in the office was becoming a premium.  Only a month ago there were up to twelve people working in an office that would comfortably sit eight! Something big had to be done so we took the decision to move upstairs into the old, derelict offices that were last used around 12 years ago.

After a renovation project which started in May, we made the big move up to our new offices on Monday 3rd October.    And this certainly was a big task as we upgraded all our systems at the same time, so the IT guys were working hard to sort everything out as well as train us on a new phone system!

So we're all still getting used to having so much space! We haven’t got our new desks yet so we are making use of some Mallani Dining Tables from the clearance section until the new office furniture arrives.  There's also a nice big window running along the length of the room which means we can now see what the weather is doing rather than just look out into the warehouse... it truly is onwards and upwards for Myakka.

On Wednesday 5th October we even had a little opening ceremony complete with ribbon cutting and a glass of bucks fizz for the whole team.  Alexandra took the whole occasion very seriously and even wore a rather spectacular hat in honour of the occasion (...or perhaps it was just being returned after a recent wedding!).
