Brand New Website!

Wednesday, 22 February 2012

We have just launched our brand new website and we would love to know what you think! We have listened to lots of feedback from our loyal customers and made changes that we think you will love. We wanted to make your shopping experience with Myakka more enjoyable and simpler so have made changes to help achieve this. But don’t worry if you were a fan of the old site, we have kept all the best bits, added new bits and just improved anything that we thought wasn't quite up to scratch.

We know a particular favourite of many of our customer is our meet the team section. It is always great to put a  face to a name, so here is your chance, even if it is a very youg face!. It has just been updated with some of our newer members of the team so take a look and have a giggle at some of our photos and “interesting” facts.

As always when working on these things, the site will never be completely finished so please let us know what you think -  hello@myakka.co.uk or drop us a line on Facebook or Twitter. Your feedback is always important to us as it is how we learn and get better so please do let us know what you think.

Happy browsing!

Take a step for Fair Trade this fair trade fortnight

Sunday, 12 February 2012

Fair trade fortnight is quickly approaching and this year’s theme is ‘Take a step’.  This year’s fortnight will run from the 27th February until the 1st March.  Over the last few years we have supported fair trade fortnight with fair trade tea parties, our big bag swap and eating a lot of fair trade bananas.

Taking a step for fair trade is all about making little steps to promote, use and support fair trade. Whether it means you buy some fair trade roses for your loved one this valentines or asking a shop to stock your favourite fair trade product or even encouraging your workplace to only buy fair trade tea and coffee. There are lots of little things you can do to take a step towards supporting fair trade.

The Fair Trade Foundation is asking for people to register their steps to foundations website. The aim is to record 1,500,000 steps this year, so if you make a step make sure that you register to show everyone the support that fair trade has in the UK. So even if you have chosen to buy a fair trade cotton tea shirt or just tried to persuade someone you know to swap their normal tea for fair trade tea, make sure you register your contribution.

What many steps will you take…? Need some inspiration...take a look at the Fair Trade Foundations Facebook and Twitter pages for lots of ideas and to read others success stories.

Dont forget to let us know what steps you have taken on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Keep your furniture looking great!

Wednesday, 8 February 2012

As the days are getting longer and the snowdrops have started to appear it can only mean one thing…Spring is in the air! As spring begins to force its way through the cold and dark its time to open the windows to let the fresh air in and start the spring clean!

To help you clean and care for your Myakka furniture our Furniture Care Expert Paul has come up with these useful suggestions on just that.

Waxing your furniture
To keep the lustre of the wood and to feed the timber, your furniture should be waxed at least once a year but I recommend it is done twice and sometimes more if it is used a lot. To wax your furniture I recommend you use a natural bees wax polish such as Mylands Antique Mahogany Wax, this helps keep the colour rich as well as feeding the wood and giving the furniture a lovely sheen.

To get the best finish from your wax follow these easy steps
  • Apply the wax with a soft cloth in a circular motion
  • Make sure that there is enough wax on the wood but not too much that it leaves streaks – this is really important
  • Leave the wax for 20 to 30 minutes so it hardens off
  • Finally buff off -  first with a shoe brush going with the grain and then with a soft cloth again going with the grain
To get into hard to reach places like in the elephant carvings –  I use an inch thick disposable paint brush and cut the bristle length down by about a third, this makes the bristle stiffer and easier to use. Then you can apply the wax into hard to reach places with the cut off brush.

Sticking Drawers
If you find that your drawers are beginning to get a little stuck when you open and close them try using a clear candle to rub along the runner of the unit and the grove of the drawer where it is sticking as this lubricates the runner and stops its from sticking.

Day to Day Cleaning
I don’t recommend you use too many silicone based spray polishes as these can block the wood and stop it from breathing. However spray polishes can be used infrequently to remove dust from the surface of your furniture. Simply spray onto a soft cloth first and then use to remove dust, do not spray onto the furniture itself.

Removing Ring Marks
Because Myakka furniture isn’t sealed, simply waxed, it is a common problem for the surface of the furniture to get damaged by hot and wet things. We recommend you always use coasters but if accidents do happen, it isn’t the end of the world. We have a video showing how to remove ring marks, to watch simply click here
