Support Recycle Week!

Part of the Myakka ethos is to be as green as possible and one of the ways we do this is by recycling as much as possible.  As well as doing recycling ourselves we want to encourage as others to recycle, so this month we are supporting Recycle Week running from 18th – 24th June. This year’s theme is  ‘recycling at home and away’ to encourage us all to recycle when we are at home and when we are out and about and at work.

When at work the Myakka team is really good at recycling as much as possible, all our plastic wrap and bottles are recycled, along with paper and cardboard as well as tins. Our suppliers in India use a lot of raffia strapping which we then donated to our local Scrap Store who use it for activities that they run throughout the year for children. To keep us all going throughout the day with teas and coffees we get our milk from the local Milk Man who reuses all the milk bottles, a great and convenient way of reducing our waste.

In the UK we are getting better and better at recycling and more and more of us are doing it. The problem that many people have is that it is difficult to know what can be recycled and what cant. The Recycle Now website is full of information from what can be recycled in your area to what the different recycling symbols mean. It is also full of tips such as you don’t need to remove the labels from your recycling and bottle tops can be recycled too if they are still on the bottle, make sure you rinse them out first though!

To inspire you to recycle just hat little bit more, here are some facts about the benefits of recycling…

  • If the 15 million bottles used each day were recycled it would be the equivalent of taking 73,000 cars off the road annually – that’s over half the number of cars entering London on any week day.
  • If everyone in in the UK recycled just one more drinks can each during Recycle Week, we’d save enough energy to light nearly 20,000/over three quarters of a million/over 11,000/6700 20W low energy (equivalent to 100W) light bulbs constantly for a year.
  • Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to power a colour TV for 15 minutes; glass can be recycled time and time again without losing any purity.
  • The UK uses 12.5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard every year, enough to fill the Albert Hall every 33 hours. 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it form raw materials.
  • In less than 2 hours the UK produces enough waste to fill the Albert Hall.

Most Local authorities now pick up our recycling in a curb side collections, so make sure you use these as much as possible. When you’re out and about most busy areas such as shopping centres and tourist attractions have recycling bins which makes it so much easier for us all to do our bit!
