Now it the ideal time to make sure your home is ready for everything that Christmas brings, from big family dinners to evening drinks parties and the need to just tidy everything away. We have console tables, blanket boxes and cupboards but one of the most popular options is the storage seat.  We have a great selection of storage seats which make the perfect perch for the hallway and includes that all important storage for shoes, it makes keeping the hall tidy super easy.  Victoria from Lancashire agrees she bought the Mallani Storage Seat in August this year…

‘A gorgeous piece of furniture that fits perfectly in my hall. I wanted something to tidy up all the shoes and bits and pieces. It does this, fits plenty in and looks stunning! The delivery service is excellent too!’

With all the unexpected guests that seem to pop round in the evening, it is important that there are enough places for the glasses of mulled wine and mince pies. Nest of tables are the perfect solution. They store neatly away when not in use, but when needed provide that all important surface area. Our best selling Contemporary Nest of Tables provide the ideal solution with three useful tables that tuck neatly inside one another. If you wanted something a little larger than the Mallani Duet Tables may be the perfect solution. This neat nest of two provides two good sized tabled that offer more surface space.  David from Eastbourne bought the Contemporary Nest of Tables in June…

‘Attractive nest of tables of nice quality. They are most useful for our guest's refreshments, are easy to keep out of view when not required and quite discrete.’

One of the most important parts of Christmas is the Christmas dinner!  The highlight of the day when the whole family sit around the table and enjoy a delicious Christmas feast. This Christmas make sure everyone can sit comfortably around the table with one of our dining tables. We have three Mallani rectangle sizes, small, large and extending, and the new Mallani Round Dining Table. Christmas Dinner often means having to fit 8 people around a table which will normally sit four. Our Mallani Extending Dining Table is the solution to this common problem. It extends from 150cm to 240cm with two leaves that slot in at each end. It can sit ten for dinner extended and six at its smaller size making it perfect for everyday use and for special occasions. All our dining tables are available with a selection of four solid Sheesham wood chairs, Delhi, Cross Back, Hathi (with a hand carved elephant on the front and back) and Upholstered. You can buy any combination of dining set and save, simply chose your table and the style of chair and buy as a set.  Christine from Longfield bought the Mallani Extending Dining Table in October this year…

‘I really needed to make a good investment in a large dining table, as our numbers vary from three to eight. I looked at loads, all in Sheesham, when I saw this table with the two leaves extending it from a standard 1.50m to 2.40m, I was really impressed . And you don't have clear the table to extend it either!( They just fit in the ends).'

Myakka does Movember

Tuesday, 30 October 2012

This year the men at team Myakka will join thousands of other men across the country (and the world) supporting Movember by growing a moustache.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with Movember, it is a charity event aimed at raising awareness and money for men’s health.  The guys will start clean shaven on November 1st and then grow a moustache until the end of November when they can shave it off, or of course keep it!

The aim of Movember is to raise awareness of men’s health particularly prostate and testicular cancer. Every Mo bro signs up to grow a moustache for the 30 days of November and in doing so becomes a walking, talking billboard for the cause. The aim is to create conversations, raise awareness as well as raising money for some really good causes.

Movember started in Melbourne, Australia and since then has grown to inspire over 1.9 million Mo bros and Mo Sistas all over the world with official campaigns taking place in Australia, UK, USA, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Belgium and the Czech Republic.

No matter the country or city, Movember will continue to work to change established habits and attitudes men have about their health, to educate men about the health risks they face, and to act on that knowledge, thereby increasing the chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.

In 2011, over 854,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world got on board, raising £79.3 million and in 2012 the aim is to match this and more!

Big steps have been taken towards changing attitudes and habits relating to men’s health around the world but there is still much to be done to catch up with the women’s health movement. Via the moustache, Movember aims to fulfil its vision of having an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health, by continuing to spark conversation and spread awareness of men’s health each year.

We will of course be updating the blog with the progress of team Myakka so make sure you check back to see how the guys are getting along.

Here is how the boys looked on the first day of the challenge...

Here we go again… Somerset Business Awards!

Friday, 12 October 2012

We are all very excited here at Myakka as we have just been shortlisted for the Somerset Business Awards. This will be Myakka’s third year of being shortlisted- this year for the Service Excellence Award. We pride ourselves on the level of customer service we provide our customers, so to be on the short list is a great endorsement of the good work we do. Our customer service team, along with everyone at Myakka, deliver some of the best customer service around and it would be great to recognise that with an award!

This year the Somerset Business awards attracted 20% more entrants than last, which makes us even prouder to be shortlisted! The selection process involves completing an in-depth application form, from there we were long-listed and had to complete a presentation to a judge (very scary as we at team Myakka don’t have to do many presentations!), then we heard we had made it into the top three. Now we will have to wait to find out the result on November 16th at the smart, black tie awards dinner.

The awards are organised by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce with the aim of celebrating the success of business within Somerset and raising their regional & national profile. Every year the awards become more and more popular, so to make the short list is a real honour.

So fingers crossed for the 16th November. Ten of the Myakka team will be getting dressed up and heading over to Taunton for the awards evening. All we have to do now a find an outfit and make our all-important menu choices!

Good luck to all the other finalist, we will see you on the 16th!

Guest Post: Healthy Planet tells us about ‘Books for Free’

Wednesday, 3 October 2012

Really? ‘Books for FREE’?

We all love a good read at Myakka HQ, we even have our own little library – so we were delighted when Dawn Newton from Healthy Planet told us about their Books for Free initiative.

Dawn writes:

So, how have we saved an amazing 812 tonnes of books from landfill?
Simple…The "Books for Free" initiative rescues unwanted books otherwise destined for landfill or pulping.
Healthy Planet redistributes these books - for free - throughout communities via our Books for Free centres nationwide.
Every book is second hand. Quite often they have been used, donated to a charity shop potentially bought and then donated again so might be third of fourth hand. From kids paperbacks, to cookery and gardening books, they all need a good home to go to!
Healthy Planet trialled the project at London Green Fair May 2010 it proved incredibly popular – we opened our first store in Basildon a few months after, and are now expanding across the UK; Find your nearest Books for Free centre on this map.
"Books for Free" now has a network of 30+ Books for Free centres throughout the UK, run by over 150 fabulous volunteers. And we are hoping to roll this fabulous community initiative even further in the coming year.
Is there a centre near you? For further info on the shops ‘Books for Free’ inhabit www.healthyplanet.org/projects/healthy-spaces.aspx

thank you Dawn, we hope to see a Books for Free centre popping up in Somerset soon! (and we love that infographic!)

So if you want to shift that growing pile of books on your bedside table, or refresh the content of your own bookcases this year - check out Healthy Planet #BooksForFree
