Keeping it local!

Monday, 15 July 2013

Here at Myakka not only do we support SKSN School in India but we also support the Somerset Community Foundation. The foundation works to create vibrant and inclusive communities in Somerset through developing a culture of local giving and enabling voluntary groups. The foundation was set up in 2002 to provide independent funding to tackle poverty and disadvantage throughout Somerset.

Since 2009, Myakka has made an annual donation to the Somerset Community Foundation into the Myakka Grass Root Fund and have become patrons of the Somerset Community Foundation. This summer, some of the Myakka fund has been given to the support organisation Ups and Downs which is a support groups for parents and careers of children with Down Syndrome. Our Warehouse Manager, Simon went along to the cheque giving which was held here in Wincanton at the local community gardens, Growing Space with the founder and Chief Executive of Ups and Downs Wendy Hellowell.

Ups and Downs works to provide support for all children with Down Syndrome across the south west and beyond and was founded here in Somerset. The aim to support every child with Down Syndrome in the best way possible to ensure they can reach their full potential. There is lots of support for parents and careers with home visits, support groups as well as providing information and resources for schools. They organise regular family fun days for all the family to enjoy and where families can exchange experiences and information.

We feel it is very important for us to support our local community and the Somerset Community Foundation provides a way for us to support great causes such as Ups and Downs that otherwise may struggle for funding. As part of our fair trade principles we want everything we do to benefit the communities we work with both in India and here in the UK.

Most areas throughout the UK will have a Community Foundation; they are a great way to help local causes. They work to connect donors with great local causes that work to overcome disadvantage and transform people lives across your area.
