Myakka’s shop in Guildford on 28th February. It’ll be a particularly exciting day for Myakka as this is their first dedicated shop, after many years of trading. So it’s great to be involved in such an auspicious occasion!
It’s not quite as random a request as it might seem: I’ve bought furniture from them before – from the Mallani range. I’m a great supporter of the company ethos and the way they trade. It might seem simplistic but it is common sense that if you have the choice of buying a great product that is fair trade, or one that isn’t, surely you’re going to go with the first option every time!
The furniture is crafted from sustainable hardwoods including Monkey Pod, Acacia, Mango and Sheesham, from plantations in some of the most fascinating parts of the world. Anyone who knows me will be aware that I love to travel. I’m lucky enough to have visited Indonesia, India and Thailand – and who knows, maybe Vietnam will be next on my list. These are all breath taking countries, and the work that Myakka does to ensure there are tree re-planting schemes in place, and to support the actual communities where the furniture is made, has to be applauded.
I’m a firm believer that if you feel strongly about something, you should do what you can to help. Another cause close to my heart is the plight of the tiger. Shockingly, there are as few as 3,000 wild tigers left on earth. If we don't act now there may well be no more of these majestic and wonderful creatures left. As a result, I support (www.TigerTime.info) which is fighting for a future for wild tigers.
So – it’s time to make a difference. In any way we can. Which is why I wish Myakka all the luck in the world and hope that Guildford is a huge success.
And if you’re in the area, maybe I’ll see you on the 28th – 196 Guildford High Street.
