Easter Dining Essentials

Friday, 20 March 2015

Easter is a great time of year to bring the whole family and many friends together to celebrate with a big Sunday Lunch and too many chocolate eggs! Make sure your dining room is ready for your extra guests with some of our clever dining solutions...

Here at Myakka we recognise the importance of choosing the right dining furniture for you. Dining furniture is often a significant investment and making sure that it is right for you and your family is vital to make sure you get many happy years use from it. So to help with making that decision we have put together a useful guide to our dining tables and chairs.

One of the first steps is to look at the amount of space you have available, remember to factor in the space chairs take up and the fact that people need to get in and out of the chairs and around the table.

Then you need to look at how many people will be sitting around the dining table, for special occasions such as Easter and everyday living, the important thing to remember is that it has to be practical for everyday dining.

Once you have the dimensions and the number of people the table has to sit, then you can start to look at the different styles that are available to you. All of the Mallani dining furniture is made from solid Sheesham wood and is available in sets with dining tables and chairs.  We also have the Stonemill Dining Set which has been crafted from reclaimed pine wood.

If you wanted something quite traditional but have a small space the Mallani Small Dining Table may be perfect. At 90cm wide and 150cm long this table will comfortably sit four people but will easily stretch to six when needed.

If the small dining table sounds perfect for everyday use but you need something bigger from time to time, then the Mallani Extending Dining Table may make the perfect alternative. The central section is the same size as the Mallani Small Dining Table and there are two leaves that that slide into the central section to extend the surface by 90cm making it 240cm long and big enough to sit 6 very comfortably all the way up to 10 guests for those special occasions.

If you have a larger room, a big family or lots of guests the Mallani Large Dining Table may be the ideal for you. At 2m long and 1m wide this table is perfect for entertaining. Wide enough to be able to handle all the food and crockery that celebrations bring and long enough to sit 8 people comfortably. This table is perfect for busy, friendly homes.

Whatever size table suits you, the chairs are the next essential requirement. We have a selection of two different style chairs. Our most popular chairs are the Mallani Upholstered Chairs. Finished with a cotton-rich natural colour chair pad these chairs would feel at home with any décor. Both smart and comfortable these chairs are a really popular option.

If you wanted to add your own seat pad then we have three other chairs that may suit. The Delhi Dining Chairs are neat and compact. These are a design classic and will suit any décor perfectly.

The Stonemill Dining Set is the perfect alternative if you wanted something in lighter wood. Made from reclaimed pine, this table is full of character and comes with two benches – perfect for the whole family. This set would be perfect for a busy family kitchen and will fit into the family life like it has always been there.

Whatever you choose, all the Myakka dining furniture is classic in design and will last a lifetime. With an occasional wax and polish, the wood will keep giving a natural lustre and shine time and time again. Remember Mallani dining tables are available as sets with the choice of two different chair styles to suit you.

Supporting Earth Hour

Tuesday, 17 March 2015

On Saturday 28th March we will be supporting WWF Earth Hour. This annual event encourages us all to switch off our lights for one hour from 8.30pm. We would like to encourage as many people as possible to join hundreds of millions of people around the world to turn off your lights for one hour on Saturday 28th March to show you care about the planet.

Earth Hour is now in its eighth year and is becoming more popular every year with 162 countries taking part in 2014. Landmarks around the world including the Sydney Opera House, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace join together in supporting this worthy cause and turn their lights off for one hour. Earth Hour starts in Samoa and ends in Tahiti with many landmarks, businesses and people joining in and turning their lights off for an hour.

If you are worried about what to do whilst the lights are off why not try having dinner by candle light, or playing a board game with your family and friends, or how about practicing yoga for the hour. Of course you could always venture outside, take advantage of the reduced light pollution, and do a bit of stargazing.

Whatever you chose to do in your hour without lights make sure you register your participation on the Earth Hour website. There are lots of hints and ideas about how to spend your earth hour as well as well as more information about Earth Hour and the things that we can do to make a difference.

So why not join the Myakka team and millions of other people around the world by turning your lights off for one hour on March 28th at 8.30pm.

Storage Solutions for Small Spaces

Wednesday, 11 March 2015

With our houses getting smaller and what seems to be an ever-growing mountain of ‘stuff’, having the right storage can make all the difference to a happy home. Here at Myakka we design all our furniture ourselves so it means we are able to create pieces that suit our customers’ homes. This means that Myakka furniture will not only look great in your home and will last a lifetime but will also take up as little floor space as possible.

Here are a few of our favourite storage solutions that have maximum storage space with minimum footprint…

New Mallani Dining Butler
This small but perfectly formed storage unit is perfect for you dining room. The moment we saw it we knew it would be the ideal cocktail cabinet, great for storing all kinds of bottles and glasses but would be equally as good in the kitchen storing jars and cookbooks.

Gypsy Petite Storage Seat
This little storage seat has been designed to fit neatly into any size hallway or smaller room. With a useful storage space below the seat for shoes and boots, this attractive seat really is the best of both worlds – practical and pretty!

New Hathi Linen Press
This cupboard with drawers is, as the name suggests, perfect for storing linens and towels with two deep shelves and a useful drawer. The linen press would work equally as well in a living room filled with board games or a bedroom for clothes storage – think of all the jumpers you could store on the deep shelves.

Coast Seat and Store
Another piece of furniture which is perfect for the hallway. Simply take a seat whilst you take your shoes off and then store them neatly beneath the hinged seat. Or fill the storage space with hats, scarves and gloves or use at the end of your bed and fill it with spare linens or out of season clothes.

Mallani Space-Saver Bookcase
The name of the bookcase says it all. Designed for maximum storage but without taking up a lot of floor space. This bookcase stores plenty of paperback books, DVDs and CDs with ease and the strong sheesham shelves can be loaded up without bowing or worrying about weight restrictions.

New Maison Petite Seven Drawer Chest
Bijou in its proportions but big on the storage space, this chest of drawers is deceptively roomy. With four half-width drawers and three full-width drawers this is perfect for storing everything from CDs to make up.

Thakat Blanket Boxes
These useful boxes are a Myakka classic. Time and time again customers comment that these blanket boxes hold more than expected. Rosamund from Devizes sums it up perfectly with her review ‘‘Tardis Box - Quality product. Doesn't look very large, but strangely seems to hold a lot!’’

New Stonemill Crate Storage
This new addition to the Myakka range is full of storage possibilities. It has an open back which makes it incredibly versatile for storing anything from books, to home entertainment systems  or your favourite collectables.

Mallani Asymmetric Drawer & Store Cupboard
This unit has a depth of only 30cm that makes it perfect for a narrow hallway or landing, or for a room that needs some extra storage but doesn’t have a lot of space. With a cupboard, 2 smaller drawers along with a deep full width drawer, this unit is full of storage potential.

New Lyme Space-maker Sideboard
This sideboard has a cupboard with a mid height shelf and two good size drawers to help you store everything from cutlery and china to DVDs and CDs. Put in any room of your home and you will wonder how you survived without it!

Whatever the problem area is in your home, we  are sure to have the perfect solution for you. If you think we are missing something that would make our range perfect, please let us know – some of our most popular designs have come from customer suggestions and requests. Email us or let us know in Facebook or Twitter.

Support International Women's Day

Thursday, 5 March 2015

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future and is this year being held on Sunday 8th March.

According to the UN, women do around 67% of the work in the world, but receive 30-40% less than men for comparable work, and many in developing countries receive no remuneration at all.   Although, here in the UK we have come a long way since the time of the suffragettes and achieved political, social and economic equality, in many countries this in not the case. To improve this, the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) is urging governments to make changes to stop this inequality and embrace an agenda for change.

So, to show the world how fair trade can make a difference to everyone’s lives, WFTO is celebrating the inspiring women who participate in fair trade enterprise across the world.  Fair Trade helps improve the lives of women globally by promoting sustainable livelihoods and development opportunities, and by ensuring those who do the work reap the reward of their efforts.

Here at Myakka, we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the women of SKSN School for physically challenged children who attend the vocational training centre (VTC) to learn seamstress skills.  Once their studies are complete, the young women use their developed skills to produce cushions, throws, bags and clothing providing an income and independence for them and their families.

Myakka has worked closely with SKSN School since 2009 providing regular annual donations towards both the school requirements and the VTC project specifically.  We have developed a range of soft furnishing products hand produced by SKSN for sale here at Myakka.  Not a charitable purchase, these products are the very essence of our passion for fair trade. The materials are locally sourced, the work is done with enthusiasm and there's no compromise on quality, giving simply beautiful results.

Currently we have a range four products we have developed with SKSN. Our original Pure Silk Cushions were the first design and are an evergreen favourite. Our Sari Patchwork Cushions and Sari Patchwork Bedspread are a popular addition to the range and look great on a bed together. The final addition to the range is the Sari Patchwork Shoulder Bag, the perfect accessory for any outfit!

Discrimination, inequality and injustice against females continue to be global problems that call for more action.  Grassroots fair trade projects across the world can help improve the lives of women and their families, providing education and training for a better future.  By supporting fair trade and International Women’s Day, we can each help to recognise and promote these steps towards equality.

And we're open!

Monday, 2 March 2015

Saturday was all systems go for the opening of our brand new Guildford store.  So with a few finishing touches and tweaks we were ready to open the doors to the lovely people of Guildford and beyond.

The official ribbon cutting was done by Myakka customer and Holby City actor Jules Knight, so with a pair of rather large scissors and after a lovely speech, the Myakka Guildford shop was officially open! The shop was packed with Myakka customers, both old and new and it was lovely to talk with customers who hadn’t been able to get down to see us in Wincanton but could pop to Guildford to see a selection of the Myakka collection. We are looking forward to getting to know some of our local customers and other Fair trade friends too. We were happy to meet Sue and Becca who are organising Guildford's Traidcraft Big Brew for Fair Trade fortnight - Saturday 7th March, between 10am and 1pm in Holy Trinity Church, Guildford.

It was a lovely day (despite the rather grey drizzle), we were so proud to see the shop looking so good, and it was lovely to hear that the visitors thought the same. So if you're in the area and had ever wanted to see Myakka furniture, accessories or gifts in person but were not able to make it to Somerset then do come and say hello!
