Sit down for Breakfast...stand UP for Farmers!

Monday, 15 February 2016

‘Sit down for breakfast, stand up for farmers’ is the theme for this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight. This year the Fairtrade Foundation aim to raise awareness of the thousands of farmers across the world making a loss on selling their crop. This year Fairtrade Fortnightruns from 29th February – 13th March and is encouraging us all to think about the farmers who male our breakfast.

Martin Luther King said famously ‘Before you finish eating your breakfast, you’ve depended on more than half the world’. Despite our dependence on the world’s farmers, they often aren’t paid a fair amount. About 795 million people around the world are undernourished, often as a result of
poverty and fluctuating prices.

So to show our support for the farmers around the world we thought we would share with you some of our favourite Fairtrade breakfast recipes and ideas, starting with the basics – tea and coffee.  All the tea and coffee we drink here at Myakka (and we drink quite a bit!) is Fairtrade, not only does it help farmers across the world, it also taste great and makes us feel good whenever we drink it.

Our second fair trade breakfast tip is Fairtrade Banana Pancakes. Not only do these taste great, but they are quick and easy to make and are pretty healthy, perfect. Just mash up one fair trade banana and whisk in two free range eggs, pour into a small non stick frying pan with a knob of butter and fry on each side until firm and golden. Perfect with some homemade raspberry jam, traditional lemon and sugar or some Fairtrade chocolate spread.
Our third Fairtrade breakfast idea is making your own Fairtrade granola. Make you perfect batch by missing oats, fair trade nuts such as almonds, hazelnuts and pecans or add a your favourite nut mix such as Liberation Fair Trade Cocktail of Nuts.. Mix with some Fairtrade or local honey and sunflower oil along with some sesame seeds. Roast in the oven at 150˚ for 45minutes, to an hour, stirring every 15 minutes.  Once out of the oven,  immediately mix in some Fairtrade dried fruits such as apricots, pineapple, raisins and mangos. Allow to cool then pour the mixture into an airtight container for storing. Perfect for breakfast or an afternoon snack.

So throughout the fortnight make sure you only drink Fairtrade tea & coffee, only add Fairtrade sugar, and make sure your bananas, nuts and any other ingredients are Fairtrade (or produced by local farmers). By making these simple, small changes you will be helping farmers across the world ensure they are able to ensure they get the basics they and their families need.

New Recycled Aluminium Range!

Wednesday, 10 February 2016

If you know Myakka you’ll know that wherever possible we like to reduce, reuse and recycle. So it was a no-brainer when we were introduced to this new Recycled Aluminium range of colourful tableware.

Recycled aluminium saves up to 90% carbon emissions compared to the production of new aluminium from bauxite AND it saves on landfill too!

Our beautiful new range includes pieces suitable for any season. A large Salad Bowl which might double as a bread basket or fruit bowl, Salad Servers, a triple Dips and Nibbles Set, which we would serve our chutneys and pickles in, and a choice of two sizes of Heart shaped dishes perfect for your Bombay mix, but equally at home on your dressing table for your jewellery!

The manufacture of these striking pieces involves the aluminium being recast then highly polished to a smooth finish. The red ombré colour is applied and allowed to dry before being hand finished with a clear enamel and then a final polish.  All items are food safe.

Our Northern Indian supplier is a family run business with a workforce of over 150 skilled artisans.
