Taking a break for Fairtrade Fortnight

Tuesday, 21 February 2017

Fairtrade Fortnight is quickly approaching and this year’s theme is to put fair trade in your break. This year’s fortnight will run from the 27th February until the 12th March.

Over the last few years, we have been big supporters of Fairtrade Fortnight. In the past, we've held Fairtrade tea parties, our big bag swap and eating a lot of fair trade bananas! This year we are getting together and putting Fairtrade into our break.

Why we're supporting Fairtrade Fortnight

Having the perfect cuppa or a snack is an important part of our daily routine. However, millions of farmers who produce the treats we enjoy during our breaks are struggling to make a living. Regardless of how hard they work to provide the products we depend on, they still aren’t paid what they deserve.

In Kenya’s coffee and tea-growing regions, one in three people lives in poverty. Meanwhile, in Malawi, tea pickers earn less than £1.46 a day. This is not enough to provide decent food, education or healthcare for their families or invest in better farming.

At Myakka, we are careful to use Fairtrade products wherever we can. All the tea, coffee and sugar we have here at the office is Fairtrade. By making small changes like buying Fairtrade tea and coffee we can all help to make big, impactful changes to producers around the world.

So throughout the fortnight (and beyond) make sure you only drink Fairtrade tea & coffee, only add Fairtrade sugar, and make sure your bananas, nuts and any other ingredients are Fairtrade (or produced by local farmers). By making these simple, small changes you will be helping farmers across the world ensure they are able to get the basics they and their families need.

Of course, we ethically source and fairly trade all of our products. Head to our website for fair trade furniture and home accessories inspiration.

If you'd like to find out more about Fairtrade Fortnight, you can find lots of information, help and links on their website.

We have a large selection of bookcases that would look great in a study, living room or dining room. The petite Jasmeen Compact Bookcase has three fixed shelves. Plus, a single drawer with an intricate fret-carved front – an elegant detail and somewhere to tuck away those bits and pieces that tend to clutter.

On the other hand, a blanket box is perfect for storage; anything from toys to bedding in any room of your home can be gobbled up by these storage marvels. The Vandara Blanket Box is both pretty and practical with hand carved lotus leaf pattern and a soft whitewashed finish. Woven home decor - natural sustainability

Wednesday, 1 February 2017

Woven home decor is really on-trend for Spring 2017. From rugs to coffee tables, baskets to footstools, the natural and textured look is creeping into homes. Not to mention that it's making a big statement in the process. We love the way this trend works with so many types of interiors; at home in both modern and traditional settings, there really is no wrong way to do it.

At Myakka, we like to think we're always ahead of the latest trends. That's why, last autumn we started working with a new supplier based in Vietnam who specialises in woven home decor products, such as our Natural Hand Woven Pouffes. Weaving baskets, rugs and pouffes, they work using sustainable, locally available materials; sea grass water-hyacinth and corn husk to name but a few. They work with groups of local women, paying them a fair wage. This also ensures the continued wide use of traditional crafts and techniques today.

An initiative founded by a woman from a traditional crafting village, the cooperative provides local women with steady and reliable income. This helps them to support their families and provides them with a better way of life. The team creates eye-catching yet functional pieces that look great modern and traditional homes.

Ethically Sourced Woven Home Decor

Some of our favourite pieces include our best selling Natural Woven Round Rugs that have been crafted from rattan, cornhusk and water-hyacinth to help create rugs with a tonal circle pattern. The Natural Woven Baskets Set of 2 have again been woven from water-hyacinth and sea grass to create an attractive striped pattern. – perfect as laundry baskets or to keep the toys tidy.

And don't just take our word for it! Vogue and The Telegraph both think that textured, woven home decor is going to be big this year.
