Sourcing New Fair Trade Furniture

Wednesday, 17 May 2017

Simon, one of our directors, has just returned from an exciting trip to India visiting our current fair trade furniture suppliers and meeting some new ones. These overseas visits are an important part of our fair trade ethos that we make regular visits to our suppliers so we can ensure that products are being made correctly and that fair trade conditions are being maintained.

Thakat Columns - Fair Trade Furniture

New Fair Trade Furniture for Autumn

Simon goes out to India twice a year to visit our suppliers and potential new suppliers. During the visit, Simon works with our suppliers to sign off new designs for the autumn catalogue. This trip also gives him the chance to start working on new designs ready for spring 2018 and beyond.

Lots of new fair trade furniture designs were checked and signed off ready for the Autumn 2017 catalogue. We are adding lots of new pieces to our existing collections including Mallani, Thakat, Jasmeen and Milborne. As well as additions to our furniture collections, there will also be lots of new soft furnishings, accessories and textiles that Simon and Georgie have picked out.

Autumn Catalogue Preparations

We can’t wait for the next few months as all the new samples arrive into Myakka HQ. We all try and sneak a peek at the new bits and pieces as soon as they come in. Then they head off to our lifestyle photography shoots in June. We then become super busy bees, working on our new catalogue and getting all the products ready to launch online.

Here at Myakka, we are very lucky to be able to design all of our furniture ourselves. We see it through from the design process to the first sample, and then through to the finished pieces. If we’re really lucky, some of our customers send us pictures of their new furniture looking great in their homes!

Keep an eye out for our autumn catalogue; it'll feature lots of the new lines that Simon & Georgie have been developing with our suppliers in India. We are always looking for new ideas for new products to develop and we welcome any requests from customers for new furniture designs. If you have a great idea for a new piece of fair trade furniture, let us know! Get in touch by email ( or send us a message on Facebook or Twitter.

Myakka Supports Somerset Day

Tuesday, 2 May 2017

Somerset Day

Thursday 11th May is Somerset Day and as a proud Somerset business, we wanted to share with you some of our favourite things about living and working in sunny Somerset. We have been based in Wincanton, Somerset, since Myakka was founded in 1999. There are so many amazing things to do here: it’s not all cider, cheese and festivals (though there is a lot of that...).

Every day is Somerset Day with attractions like these...

Exploring Ham Hill

This hill and surrounding Country Park is a great walk. Not only can you walk up the hill to see the war memorial and then back down to get a Sunday roast in the pub, but there's a stone circle, iron age ramparts and time stones.

Over 60km of Somerset coastline

...and lots of towns and villages along the way making exploring the coastline great fun. Who could resist an ice cream or fish and chips from Burnham-on-Sea or Minehead?

Explore beautiful Wells Cathedral

Considered to be one of the most beautiful of England’s gothic cathedrals, this is really worth a visit. Wells is England smallest city and well worth a walk around once you have finished admiring the amazing stain glass windows of the Cathedral.

Bath’s Roman Baths

A visit to Bath is often high on the list of priorities when visiting Somerset and the Roman Baths are well worth the trip. No visit is complete without trying some of the interesting tasting spa water itself.

Cheddar Gorge

This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is well worth a visit along with the village of Cheddar itself. You can even take a tour of a cheese company which still uses Cheddar caves to age its cheese.

Hauser & Wirth, Bruton

This unique art gallery is on a restored 18th-century farm. With different contemporary art shows and exhibitions, this gallery in the pretty village of Bruton is great for a stroll. Not to mention it's free to browse.

The Frome Independent Market

Frome is a lovely town to visit at any time, but the monthly market makes it a great day out. Filled with local and artisan stall holders, you can buy anything from locally produced cheese and charcuterie to a one-of-a-kind lampshade or clothing.

Montacute House

This National Trust property is a great family day out. An amazing Elizabethan house (where lots of films and dramas have been filmed!) and beautiful grounds make a fun trip for both old and young. Moreover, the Long Gallery in the house also features an exhibition from the National Portrait Gallery of Elizabethan & Jacobean portraits. Whether or not any of these attractions appeal, there is something for everyone in Somerset. Stuffed full of history and culture it is a great place to visit, live or work.

We will leave you with our favourite Somerset fact...there are over 400 different varieties of cider apple grown in Somerset!

Finally, you can find out more about visiting Somerset here, and more about Somerset Day here. And if you're in the area - pop in for some Myakka shopping! We're waiting to welcome you, just 2 minutes off the A303, turn off at Wincanton.
