Will it fit? Our tips for measuring up for furniture

Making sure your new furniture will both fit into your home and look great once there is a really important part of deciding which furniture is for you. Spending a little time measuring up and thinking about the practicalities of the furniture will help ensure that you make the correct decision.

When measuring space for Myakka furniture please make sure that you take into consideration the hand made nature of the furniture. We always recommend that you allows +/- 2cm. We always use centimetres to measure our items and all measurements within our catalogue and online are cm.
It is really important to consider how the furniture will sit in your space – it needs to both look great and be functional. It is also important to consider how your new furniture will look with any of your existing furniture.

A top tip for making sure it all fits is to make a template of the furniture from newspaper. Using dimensions given simply stick pieces of newspaper together to make a 2D template which will allow you to move it around to consider different positions (it is a lot easier to move newspaper than a heavy piece of furniture!) If you don’t have any newspaper you can also use masking tape to mark out the size of the furniture.  (This is also particularly useful when buying a new sofa or any other large piece of furniture!)

If you are left with lots of space it may be worth going bigger or adding another piece of furniture conversely you may be left with little space in which case you may want to reconsider size, design or number of furniture items.

With your newspaper templates it is also worth considering how much free space you will have. As a general rule you need to allow space between one piece of furniture to the next, it can often look smarter if there is a space of around 30cm between one piece of furniture to the next. Chairs placed around a dining table need 50-70cm of space between the back of the chair and any walls or other items of furniture. The larger the chair the more room you will need.

Other considerations include allowing enough room for cupboard doors and drawers to open. Allow at least 80cm of space between furniture and opposite walls for walkways such as hallways and landings, this will ensure that walkways are clear and won’t appear too cluttered. Ceiling height is also an important consideration; anything too tall will make your room look squashed.  Allow for some space, about 20cm, above any tall items of furniture to ensure your room looks spacious.

One of the most important parts of measuring up is ensuring that your new furniture will fit comfortably through doorways, up any stairs and through hallways.  If you have had any major building work since you last moved furniture please measure again to ensure that the proposed furniture will fit. A return delivery charged may be levied for furniture that is not able to be delivered.

We know buying furniture is a big decision and often you may need further advice, our friendly Customer Service Team or always on hand to offer advice and have extensive range of product knowledge as well as further product dimensions and other information. Give them a call between 9am-5.30pm Monday to Friday on 0845 460 3122 or email and we will get back to as soon as we can.

More Snow!

What a lot of snow! Down in Somerset, we were hit on Friday with a great deal of snow and then we had some more on Tuesday night which is taking its time to melt and has left us with some slippery ice to contend with. Although the snow is a lot of fun to play in, it isn’t fun to drive or make deliveries in. Our delivery partners are working hard to ensure deliveries arrive on time but inevitably there are going to be some delays.

We have had updates today from our deliver partners who are all working as hard as possible to make deliveries where it is safe to do so. Our updates from this morning state that most routes are good, if a bit slower than normal, but untreated side roads and lanes are a little more difficult. Deliveries will always be attempted but sometimes, if it is deemed not safe, the delivery might not make it.

The advice and information we can give you depends on which delivery partner your parcel is on its way with. If you have any questions or concerns please contact our lovely Customer Service Team on 0845 460 3122 who will be happy to advice.

Parcelforce have issued the below statement as of the morning of Wednesday 23rd January. If you are still unsure about your delivery please give our friendly Customer Service Team a call who will be happy to help.

‘The severe weather again in many areas across the UK today is continuing to make deliveries and collections extremely difficult in the affected areas. We do anticipate some delays to deliveries particularly in rural areas, on higher ground and on side roads where access is either very difficult or not possible because of the severe conditions, but the overall position across the UK continues to improve. There has been further snow overnight and this morning in North East, South West England and South Wales which, on top of the snow and ice already laying, is causing particular difficulties with deliveries in the following postcode areas – BA, BS, CF, GL, HD, HX, NP, SN and SY.
We would like to thank you for your continued patience and understanding during these difficult conditions and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.’

Interlink have a useful postcode search which will let you know if there are any delays in your area, simply type in your postcode click submit and it will update you

Two Man Service
No delays have been reported but please call us at the office if you have any concerns and we can look into it for you. We normally suggest allowing 10 working days for delivery once the order has left us, during this snowy time we are advising that orders may take slightly longer.

We will update our blog with more information as and when we get it. Fingers crossed some for some sunnier weather soon so we can say goodbye to the icy slush we have at the moment! The Myakka team have all managed the trek into HQ and we are always happy to help so please do contact us if you have any questions.

Fancy a holiday? Make it an ethical one!

Going on holiday is normally the highlight of most people's year. And now we are well and truly in holiday season we thought it would be great to take a look at some of the more ethical an green holidays out there for anyone who wants something a little different or even just to lie on a sunny beach, here are our top 10…

1.    A Tour of Rajasthan, India
We have a soft spot for Rajasthan as it is where most of our furniture is made. Take this guided trip around this beautiful state with a local guide who will teach you the customs and traditions. At the end of your trip donate your unwanted clothing, medicine and bandages to a charity that help distribute it across to the most remote parts of India.

2.    Stay in a Tree House in France
Stay on some fabulous campsites around France and stay in some amazing tree house built around the trees.  Keep your holiday green by catching the ferry over to France  and enjoying staying way up high in the trees!

3.    Timber Lodge in Mid Wales
Stay in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of the UK in a purpose built timber lodge. Sustainably built using local timber and local craftsmen. Once there take a walking tour of the area or visit the famous Red Kite feeding station to experience some of the wildlife fist hand.

4.    Stay on in Yurt on the Isle of Wight
The closer we stay to home the lower our carbon footprint, so why not visit the Isle of Wight. Yurts are the perfect compromise between camping and hotels with all the creature comforts we are used to but with the feeling of being under canvas. To reduce your carbon footprint you can even plant an apple tree or other native tree.

5.    The perfect Caribbean Eco hotel
The Caribbean has been a holiday hotspot for many years and now you can stay at a number of eco hotels. One of the best we have found is the Hix Island House in Vieques, Puerto Rico. This purpose built eco hotel collects rain water which is heated by solar power for your shower. Most imporatnatly there are no phones or TVs in any of the rooms for perfect peace and quiet!

6.    Whale Watching in New Zealand
Owned and operated by the indigenous Maori community, this sustainable company was founded to find jobs for the indigenous community and use environmentally friendly vessels. This is now one of new Zealand’s South islands biggest tourist attractions and has won conutless international awards.

7.    Malaysian Mountain Side Lodge
If your idea of the perfect holiday is a tropical island with turquoise sea and white sand then this may be the place for you. Situated on a remote beach in Malaysia this resort hotel has been built using mostly recycled materials with minimal effect on the local environment, the lodge also employs people from the local village.

8.    2 week Loop around Turkey
Starting and ending in Istanbul this unique holiday lets you see the cultural side to Turkey. The most green way to get to Turkey is to get the train from London to Istanbul via Paris, Munich,  and Bucharest and surprisingly only takes 2 days.

9.    Cycling Holiday  in Norway
Using the most green form of transport this holiday provides beautiful sights at a gentle paced road tour exploring Norway’s beautiful Lofoten Islands. Why not avoid flying by catching the ferry via.  Harwich, Esbjerg and Copenhagen

10.    Escape to Cornwall’s Luxury Eco Hotel
Cornwall is one of the most popular stops for holidays in the UK and the Scarlet Hotel provides the perfect eco place to stay. With grey water recycling, solar panels  they work to reduce their carbon footprint by 10% every year and aim to source 90% of consumables from the south west.

On your bike!

The sport of choice here at Myakka is cycling. One of our founders Simon is always on his bike along with Peter and Elaine in accounts and James out in the warehouse. Not only is cycling a great sport (fingers crossed for the Olympics) but it is also a healthy and green mode of transport.

Next week sees the start of Samsung Bike Week which is the biggest nationwide cycling event in the UK. The aim of this event is to encourage us all to join in events and to simply rethink everyday journeys and switch to cycling as the most convenient way to get around.

Samsung are running a Hope Relay and for every mile cycled in a cycle week event, Samsung will donate £1 to charity. To be a part of this, all you need to do is go to the Samsung website and follow the instructions to download the Hope Relay app.

There are hundreds of events being run all over the UK from Charity Rides, Dr Bike/ Cycle Safety Checks, Commuter challenges, guided rides and time trials. Simply visit the Bike Week website to find your local event.

The Bike Week website also includes a great blog all about cycling and the different events being held. It is a great way to learn more about bike week and cycling. Whilst you are there you can also sign up to a Bike Week newsletter and use the Cycling Calculator to work out how many calories your cycle ride had burnt off or how much cycling could save you on your daily commute.

Why not check out the website to find your local event or to find out how cycling could make you fitter, happier and healthier!

Celebrate with Cake!

Here at Myakka when we aren’t talking about furniture, we are talking about and making (and of course eating) cakes. With the Jubilee fast approaching, we thought we could share some of our favourite cake recipes with you in preparation for any street parties and events you may have coming up.

Alexandra’s Flapjack recipe has proven to be really popular in the office and the recipe has been passed around to lots of people here. If you like a nice gooey and chewy flapjack, this is the recipe for you…

      • 500g porridge Oats
      • 250g butter
      • 250g  fair trade brown Sugar
      • 4-6 tablespoons golden syrup
Melt together the butter, sugar and golden syrup. Add the porridge oats along with any extra ingredients you may want to add such as sultanas, raisins, pine nuts, sesame seeds, pumpkin seed, or nuts….anything you fancy really. Press it down into a shallow tin and bake at 180°C for approximately 20 minutes until golden brown. Delicious!

If pretty cupcakes are more your thing, then why not try Natalie’s Jubilee Cupcakes. Decorated with red, white and blue butter icing, these cupcakes are a fun way to celebrate the Queen’s 60 Years.

      For the cupcakes-

      • 200g soft butter
      • 200g fair trade caster sugar
      • A couple of drops of vanilla extract
      • 4 free range eggs
      • 200g plain flour
      • 10g baking powder
      • Pinch of salt

For the butter icing – (this makes more than enough for the 12 cupcakes)

      • 200g very soft butter
      • 400g fair trade icing sugar
      • A couple of drops of vanilla extract
      • Red and blue food colouring, I always use gel food colouring.
Beat together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and beat. One at a time beat in the eggs. If the mixture begins to curdle add in a table spoon of flour. Then fold in the remaining flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt. If the mixture is very stiff, you can add some milk to loosen it. Put into cupcake cases (I have used special union jack cupcake cases which are everywhere at the moment), about 12 or so and bake in the centre of the oven at 170°C for about 25 minutes until golden and cooked all the way through.  Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes then move to wire rack to cool completely.

For the icing beat the butter until completely smooth with no lumps, a bit at the time add the icing sugar and beat hard, keep going until the mixture is pale and fluffy. The more you beat the mixture, the lighter in colour it will become making it better for the ‘white’ part of the icing. Separate the mixture into three bowls, of roughly equal amounts of icing. Add red food colouring to one bowl and blue food colouring to the other, as per instructions on the pack and beat well to ensure the colour is even throughout. Next use a piping bag fitted with a medium star nozzle and fill with alternate spoonful’s of the three different colour icing. Then decorate the cooled cupcakes with the piping bag and you should get a pretty marbled, 3 colour effect.

If you have a go at making any of these recipes, please do let us know how it goes on Facebook and Twitter. Here at Myakka headquarters we are holding a Jubilee Tea Party to celebrate where we will hopefully be eating lots of delicious cakes and sandwiches made by the Myakka team. Finger crossed the sunny weather continues so we can make it a picnic! Watch this space for pictures of our yummy homemade treats.

Go green and take part in the Great British Walking Challenge

Here at Myakka when we aren’t packing furniture, chatting to our customers or designing new furniture we like to stay fit and healthy by walking as much as possible. But walking is a great way of getting around. The charity Living Streets has research to show that if we all swapped 5 short car journeys under 2km in to walks we could reduce our personal carbon footprint by 86kg per year.

To encourage us all to do a little more walking and a little less driving Living Streets hold the Great British Walking Challenge which takes place this month in May as part of the charities National Walking Month. The aim is to get people walking across the country and see how many times we can collectively walk form Land’s End to John O’Groats .

To help and encourage us on our way, Living Streets have lots of tools to calculate how far you have walked, how much CO2 you have saved and record the steps you have taken.  The Great British Walking Week is open to everyone regardless of fitness levels and age. Every walk counts, whether it is to pop down to your local shop, a quick walk to school or work in the morning, of just a leisurely stroll around your neighbourhood.

Why not get a group of friends together and go for a long walk in the country, or how about getting off the bus a stop  early so you can walk and prepare yourself for the day, one of the easiest way to increase your walking is taking a lunch hour stroll, a great way to clear your mind before the afternoon and you get a break from your computer screen! Don’t forget to register you steps online, just click here to let Living Streets know how far you have walked and make your steps count towards the challenge.

This year Living Streets are asking us to go on Twitter and Facebook and share our walking images and sounds. If using Twitter then simply use the hashtag #gbwalk. There is also a challenge on Pinterest to try and get as many Mums as possible to share unique images from their walking with the hastag #mumswalk. So why not share some of things that you love about walking. Whether it is an unusal shaped tree and pretty coloured sky, share your images on Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook.

The best pins will be added to the Living Streets Pinterest board and their favourite images will be used  for a real life walking photography exhibition planned for June.

To sign up for the challenge this month click here

      Furniture delivery service with Yodel

On Thursday Yodel, the courier company we use for larger furniture items was featured on Watchdog. Although like every delivery company, occasionally Yodel makes mistakes and deliveries don’t go to plan, the majority of our customers are very happy with the service they receive from Yodel.

The service we use from Yodel is the Yodel XL service which deals with heavier, bulkier items requiring a 2 man service rather than the quicker, one man normal Yodel service which was the main focus of the complaints on Watchdog.

Following the airing of Watchdog, Yodel has released the following statement.

"Yodel successfully delivers approximately 170 million parcels a year on behalf of many of the UK’s top retailers.

The overwhelming majority of these deliveries run smoothly however occasionally we face challenges, some of which are beyond our control, and we have worked closely with Watchdog to investigate and address the customer issues raised on the programme.

We set ourselves high standards.  Good customer service is a priority for Yodel and we always aim to achieve best service."

We have been working with Yodel for over three years and continually receive positive reviews from our customers about the level of service they have received from both Myakka and Yodel. An overwhelming majority of deliveries Yodel make on our behalf are completed without a hitch with satisfied customers.  Here are a small selection of reviews from happy Myakka and Yodel customers…

      Climate Week!

This week we are supporting Climate Week, running form Monday 12th March – Sunday 18th March. Climate Week is all about finding simple ways that we can all benefit the environment in small and manageable ways which are easy to build into our everyday lives.

There are hundreds of events around the country that are being held to try and encourage people to live more sustainably. This year Climate Week are encouraging us all to try and eat low carbon meals.  By eating locally produced, seasonal foods we can lower our carbon footprint. Also by eating less meat and dairy foods, as these have very high carbon footprints, we can help reduce our environmental impact.  And of course one of the easiest ways we can help is by using our leftovers and making sure we don’t waste any food. Each year around 18million tonnes of edible food ends up in landfill. Around 1/3 of this waste is made by households so if everyone made the effort to use their leftovers we could help reduce the waste!

Here is a recipe for a delicious Rich Leek Tart from Christine Mosler, a local food writer based in Frome, Somerset,?  who has lots of yummy recipes. Why not visit your local market or farm shop to get the most local ingredients possible.  The cheddar we used is from a lovely local dairy, Wyke Farms which is about 10 minutes away from us here at Myakka.

1 pack fresh short crust pastry

      500g trimmed leeks, sliced

      50g butter

      75ml single cream

      75ml semi-skimmed milk

      3 eggs

75g grated cheddar (we use Wyke Farms Mature by Nature Organic Cheese)

      1 tsp Dijon mustard

      salt and pepper

      1. Lightly grease a 23cm flan dish (a bit bigger is fine but you’ll have filling left over if you go any smaller). Roll out the pastry to fit, don’t trim the edges yet. Fork the case all over. Chill for 20 mins.

      2. Preheat oven to 180c.

      3. While the oven is heating and the pastry case is chilling. Make the filling. Melt the butter and olive oil gently over a low heat. Add the chopped leeks and cover. Cook gently for 20 mins – half an hour until leeks are soft and buttery. Try not to brown too much. Avoid taking the lid off and allow the leeks to steam and sizzle at the same time.

      4. Whisk the eggs in a bowl then whisk in the cream, milk, Dijon and salt and pepper. Add 3/4 of the grated cheese.

      5. Line the pastry case with baking parchment and baking beans (I use dried chick peas which I keep for this purpose) and pop into the oven for 15 minutes. Remove the baking parchment and beans and cook for a further 5 mins to cook the base.

      6. Cover the pastry case with the leeks. Pour in the egg/cream/cheese mixture. Top with the remaining cheese. Trim the edges. (I forgot this bit and trimmed before I blind baked the case this time and, as you can see from the photo below, it shrank!)

      7. Cook for 20 mins at 180c then turn the oven up to 200c and cook for a further 10 -20 mins until beautifully golden brown on top and smelling gorgeous!

Serve with new potatoes and French beans or salad.

      A brand new range!

This spring we are proud to launch our brand new range, Orissa. This new range is hand crafted from solid Mango hardwood with intricate carvings worked into the frames of the furniture. Flowers and chevrons are patiently hand carved into the wood to offer a touch of Eastern artistry to every item.

Made from mango wood with the same finish as our Pali range, Orissa offers the same subtle and harmonious grain that will sit well with your existing furniture pieces. Mango is one of the most sustainable hardwoods as the tree is first grown for fruit and then used for timber. When the tree reaches its full height after about 20 years, it stops producing fruit, or produces a lot less, so it is then used for timber.  After the trees have been felled new trees are planted to continue the cycle.

Currently the Orissa range has two practical pieces, a bookcase and a sideboard. We are currently working with our manufacturers in India to make more new pieces in this new range which will be available from Autumn 2012.

      Keep your furniture looking great!

As the days are getting longer and the snowdrops have started to appear it can only mean one thing…Spring is in the air! As spring begins to force its way through the cold and dark its time to open the windows to let the fresh air in and start the spring clean!

To help you clean and care for your Myakka furniture our Furniture Care Expert Paul has come up with these useful suggestions on just that.

      Waxing your furniture
To keep the lustre of the wood and to feed the timber, your furniture should be waxed at least once a year but I recommend it is done twice and sometimes more if it is used a lot. To wax your furniture I recommend you use a natural bees wax polish such as Mylands Antique Mahogany Wax, this helps keep the colour rich as well as feeding the wood and giving the furniture a lovely sheen.

To get the best finish from your wax follow these easy steps
      • Apply the wax with a soft cloth in a circular motion
      • Make sure that there is enough wax on the wood but not too much that it leaves streaks – this is really important
      • Leave the wax for 20 to 30 minutes so it hardens off
      • Finally buff off -  first with a shoe brush going with the grain and then with a soft cloth again going with the grain
To get into hard to reach places like in the elephant carvings –  I use an inch thick disposable paint brush and cut the bristle length down by about a third, this makes the bristle stiffer and easier to use. Then you can apply the wax into hard to reach places with the cut off brush.

      Sticking Drawers
If you find that your drawers are beginning to get a little stuck when you open and close them try using a clear candle to rub along the runner of the unit and the grove of the drawer where it is sticking as this lubricates the runner and stops its from sticking.

      Day to Day Cleaning
I don’t recommend you use too many silicone based spray polishes as these can block the wood and stop it from breathing. However spray polishes can be used infrequently to remove dust from the surface of your furniture. Simply spray onto a soft cloth first and then use to remove dust, do not spray onto the furniture itself.

      Removing Ring Marks
Because Myakka furniture isn’t sealed, simply waxed, it is a common problem for the surface of the furniture to get damaged by hot and wet things. We recommend you always use coasters but if accidents do happen, it isn’t the end of the world. We have a video showing how to remove ring marks, to watch simply click here
