Carymoor Environmental Trust invited Myakka to join them at a special event last week. The event was to celebrate 21 years of their inspiring work reclaiming a local disused landfill site. Since 1996, they have transformed this desolate landscape into a beautiful nature reserve, with a sustainably built education centre and visitor attraction. The centre includes sensory & wildflower gardens, Celtic roundhouse, replica shanty town, forest school area and much more. The site also boasts some exciting species of wildlife too, which shows that all the hard work is worth it!

‘Going Underground’

Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis was also invited to open a new interactive exhibit at the site called ‘Going Underground‘. Michael has a keen interest in sustainability and ecology. This installation, built into a shipping container, will live underground like a time-tunnel. It takes visitors on a time-walk revealing how fashion, packaging, news and popular culture have changed; from the 1970’s to present day. However, it highlights that although the world moves on, many of the toys, music players, clothes and appliances still live on in landfill.

Pond-Dipping Platform

Myakka’s involvement with Carymoor began a couple of years ago when we collaborated to create a pond-dipping platform. It’s become a valuable asset for teaching children about wildlife. Visiting school parties use it to find rare newts and pondlife! You can read more about the story of the pond-dipping platform in our previous blog.
