As part of our commitment to have minimal effect on the environment we have worked with the Carymoor Trust to help improve our local environment and the environmental education of our local community. Carymoor is based just down the road from Myakka HQ in the pretty Somerset town of Castle Cary.

The Trust carries out pioneering land restoration and habitat creation work on 100 acres of capped landfill. The centre is located working next door to a working active landfill site which provides the perfect contrast of the sustainable environmental projects versus the less sustainable use of landfill.

We have recently donated to the trust to help with their renovations project to restore the long pond and install dipping platforms that will be used during educational visits. Transforming the pond from its current state into vibrant habitat where visitors can pond dip and learn more about local wildlife.

To improve the environment of the pond, it first had to go back to basics so it could be cleared and out and prepared, the before and after pictures look like they are currently the wrong way round, but it has to go back to basics before it can be improved. Work started in early January 2016 and Simon, one of our directors went to visit at the end of the Month to see the work that has been completed.

To continue the work further and to make a real education tool for children for generations, the trust are looking for more donations to help make the long pond a real feature of the nature reserve. To find out more about the project and to learn how you can help, simply click here.

We can’t wait to see the final results!
