Wherever possible we make sure that we recycle as much as we possibly can. We want to make sure that we have the smallest impact on the environment possible. This year we will be supporting Recycle Week which has an aim of encouraging us all to recycle as much as possible. This year recycle week will run from Monday 22nd June to Sunday 28th June with the theme of recycling round the home.
Here at Myakka we like to think we are very good at recycling as much as possible. All our plastic wrap and bottles are recycled, along with paper and cardboard as well as all of our cans. Our suppliers in India use a lot of raffia strapping which we then donated to our local Scrap Store who use it for activities that they run throughout the year for children. We are always looking at ways we can recycle even more and work with our suppliers to make sure that we use recyclable materials wherever possible. There are lots of things around our homes that can be recycled instead of being thrown away if we look into it.
In the UK, we are getting better at recycling and more of us are doing it than ever. The problem that many people have is that it is difficult to know what can be recycled and what can’t. The Recycle Now website is full of information to help you find out what can be recycled in your area and what the different recycling symbols mean. It is also full of practical tips such as you don’t need to remove the labels from your recycling and bottle tops can be recycled too if they are still on the bottle – make sure you rinse them out first though! As a nation, we are now recycling 50% of plastic bottles which means over the last 10 years we have recycled over £339 billion worth of plastic!
Metal drinks cans are 100% recyclable. A single metal drinks can could be recycled eight times in the space of a year, saving enough energy to make 160 new cans. Recycled plastic bottles can be turned into lots of different things such as home insulation, water butts and garden sheds. For example, a fleece jacket can be made from only 25 recycle plastic bottles.
