We have recently started working with the Carymoor Environmental Trust who are based in Castle Cary, Somerset – just down the road from Myakka HQ. The Trust carries out pioneering land restoration and habitat creation work on 100 acres of capped landfill. The centre is located working next door to a working active landfill site which provides the perfect contrast of the sustainable environmental projects versus the less sustainable use of landfill.

The Trust provides educational training for schools and clubs which help children understand the importance of the environment and how sustainability and the environment is important but fun.  The trust can teach students about everything from recycling to global citizenship.

The trust is currently fundraising for the Carymoor Wetland Centre project. The trust wants to build a new all-weather wetlands centre which will help visitors get up close and personal with nature at the site. With aims to improve the long pond, build a wildlife trail and an education centre to help visitors gain a better understanding of their surroundings.  To do this the Carymoor Environmental Trust needs to raise £25,000. Here at Myakka we think it is important to support our local community and to help educate people, especially the young, on the importance of the environment and sustainability. To help the project on its way we have made a donation  towards the new wetland centre which we hope will bring people closer to nature.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the Carymoor Environmental Trust or would like to know more about the volunteering opportunities  please take a look at their website which is full of information about volunteering opportunities and about the new Wetlands Centre.
