Myakka kilim rugs

What is a kilim rug?

Our customers often ask us, ‘what is a kilim rug?’. Most of the rugs we have available are kilim rugs. So, we wanted to take this opportunity to tell you a little more about these versatile and stylish rugs, and why a kilim rug could be perfect for you.

Kilim rugs are flat woven, unlike other styles of rugs. Thus, they don’t have any pile like a more traditional carpet. This does mean that they can feel a little thin compared to other rugs. However, as they have a very close weave and the strength of the materials used, kilims are a very durable rug.

Wool & cotton blend

80% wool and 20% cotton blend makes up the majority of our kilim rugs. Both these materials are farmed around India; most of the wool comes from the Bikaner area of India in the North West neighbouring Pakistan. The weavers carefully hand spin, wash and hand dye the rugs. Then, they weave it into the beautiful kilims that look great in your home.

Many of the skilled weavers work in factories or from home on their own looms, working either by themselves or in pairs, depending on the size of the rug. Traditionally many of the patterns and symbols had meanings with each rug telling a story; perhaps of long life, fertility and family. Now, more modern designs tend to have a more geometric in design. Many of the weavers who work from home have to fit their weaving time in around farming, which can make supply a little unpredictable! Once finished, the kilim rug is taken to the main warehouse by the weavers to be quality checked, before packing it up ready to be shipped over to the UK.

This summer we have three new kilim designs available, with more in the pipeline for autumn. Make sure you take a look at all our kilims here. Stylish and durable, you won’t regret bringing a beautiful kilim rug into your home.
