New additions to the Myakka range this autumn include candles, spices and accessories from Dalit. We love the ethos and ethics behind Dalit and that every time a Dalit product is purchased some of the poorest people in India will benefit.

Dalit Candles use the profits from the sale of the candles to help fund projects to help the Dalit people such as education programmes, health care and orphanages for street children.

There are thought to be about 250 million Dalit people in India. These ‘untouchables’, are considered the lowest within the Indian caste system, were, and sometimes still are, discriminated against because of this. Their clay drinking vessels were smashed after use so that a person from a higher caste could not become ‘contaminated’. The word Dalit literally translates to ‘downtrodden and oppressed’.

Here at Myakka we are working with Dalit Candles who, by using the clay pots that were once used for drinking by the Dalit people, have turned them into vessels for beautifully scented candles.

The clay pots are made by the Dalit people in the same way they have been made for genrations. The pots are then filled with natural beeswax with a lavender scent made from the finest ingredients. They are made by Dalit people to the highest ethical and environmental standards.

Dalit Candle sets of candles, lanterns and spices are beautifully packaged and would make great gifts. Every set sold makes a positive difference to lives of the Dalits!

Myakka is delighted to be working with Dalit Candles and to be supporting a cause that is making such a positive difference to the Dalit community in India. Much of our furniture is sourced from India and so it is very close to our hearts. Being able to support a project doing this valuable work is a real pleasure, and the candle pots are beautiful and smell delicious too!
