Simon and Sally have just returned from a whistle-stop trip to Amsterdam, where they took part in a Peer Group session to discuss a number of Fair Trade related topics. The Event was organised by the CBI – the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from developing countries – a division of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  A diverse group of entrepreneurs, representatives from the Fair Trade sector and trade promotion organisations made the journey from the UK, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands to the beautiful Hortus Botanicus (Botanical Gardens), Amsterdam. As a successful UK business importing Fair Trade products, Simon & Sally from Myakka were delighted to join in the discussions and help compile a market insight report for the CBI to share with exporters in developing countries.

The highlights of the discussions were the perception and benefits of Fair Trade, how it should be made easier for consumers to recognise Fairly Traded products, the future of Fair Trade and the importance of sharing the stories behind Fair Trade products so customers are more aware of how their purchasing choices benefit all those involved in the supply chain. Following the discussions, it was concluded that Fair Trade needs to move forward from being limited to traditional sectors such as handicrafts, coffee and bananas to a concept which can be applied to any business model, ensuring a fairer supply chain in any industry. This is something we at Myakka are continuously working towards, we want to make sure that not only when you buy a beautiful piece of furniture or product for your home you will love the design, quality and workmanship but also the fact that it is Fair Trade.

It wasn’t all work, despite the tight schedule Simon and Sally still managed to find some time to take a ride on a Dutch ‘Oma’ (Grandma) bike alongside one of the pretty Amsterdam canals. It was a great opportunity for Myakka to attend an event like this and share our experience and passion for Fair Trade.
